“It's about three crucial moments in the life of one woman, and how she goes from being a misfit to finding a place in this world.
It started out long ago in a different form. I was working on it as a screenplay, and in the time-honored method all the action takes place on one day, when Denny gets a part in a school play. I was committed to that format—that was my crutch to make it seem do-able, to have this constraint that everything had to be time-bound.
That sat in a drawer for a year and a half. I wasn't sure what I had written—a short story, a novella? Then one day I realized in a bolt out of the blue that Denny could grow up, that she could get older! When I took it from screenplay to prose format, all the other characters started to take off.”
